BL - NK

Shoreditch is located in Greater London in the borough of Hackney, which it has been in since 1965. It lies directly to the north of the City of London and is an inner city district in the historic East End of London and modern Central London. BL-NK has been created to serve as a hub for showcasing local projects and encouraging inward investment for Hackney and East London businesses and initiatives, whose huge variety mirrors that of the thriving community. They currently have a new building based along Curtain Road in Shoreditch, which is going to be used for their next ‘hub’.

The concept for the proposal is to make the building become a space for the manufacturing of clothing and exhibition of it. A circular weaving loom based on the ground floor can be seen from the street through the partly glass façade. When walking up the ramp to the entrance which has been placed back from the street you can see further into the building and see the thread which has been woven throughout the space mimicking the circular weaving loom and creating exiting spaces for the user to enjoy. Once over the threshold it can be noticed that above the weaving machine a void is situated this is created through both levels so the user can view the machine working all floors.

Someone wishing to create clothing can come in and hire out the machinery and once the fabric has been made from it they can take it up stairs to the second floor, which is solely used for the designing and making of the clothing. There is workspace and storage available and a semi-private meeting room, divided using lots of pieces of thread stretched from ceiling to floor, which can be hired out. Once the garments have been designed and made they can be taken back down to the ground floor where Fashion shows are held and models can walk along the Catwalk which has been designed to make the most of he buildings angles and walk up a ramp along the end and down the ramp the other side. Bright lights are installed to ensure the models are well lit in the day and at night. A glass skylight has been installed, to provide further lighting, from the roof terrace above so anybody wanting to view a show but not wanting to take a seat situated around the catwalk can view it from there.
