The Hidden Margate
Situated on the South East coast of England in the district of Thanet lies a seaside town called Margate. It was once a leading seaside resort, which came into decline due to the increasing shift to holidays abroad.
When visiting the town, a range of captivating interior spaces were apparent, however these were found to be overlooked by their exterior. This is due to the run down appearance of the outer space.
Therefore, to tackle this problem we decided to create an App, which will increase awareness of the interior spaces available in Margate. The locations of the interesting interior spaces would be displayed on a map of Margate to facilitate access to these places.
These would show up similarly to the layout of Google maps, in which there will be drop pin, drawing attention to each location. When users zoom into the locations, a small image of the interior will surface to give an idea of its design.
Users can also select the drop pin to get more information about the place in terms of reviews, and what is available. Therefore this works similarly to apps such as Google Maps and Trip Advisor.
The aim of the App is to draw more people to visit Margate as well as raise awareness of these overseen interiors, bringing them into the spotlight. In order to achieve this we will need to catalogue all these interiors and their locations, in a format that will allow these to be transferred into our App. The App will be free in order to encourage its’ use, and we would get funds from businesses looking to place adverts on this App.
The main event we are planning to start cataloguing images was held on the 21st of March 2014 at the Margate Train Station, as it is one of the main means of transportation. We are targeting commuters, residents and tourists, as we want a wide range of spaces to be explored. This enables us to variety of people with different ideas and knowledge of the area.
As people walk into Margate they will be given a card, which will have all the information of how to take part. On their way back to the train station they will be able to see a wall of interior spaces beside a map of Margate to create the look of the app.We will encourage users to send us pictures of interesting interiors they find in order to keep developing this App, and to make sure we do not leave out any important interior spaces that we may not be aware of.
